David Lawrence has been involved in many great endeavors and has left his mark on all of them, not the least of which is education. We are honored to have our school named for David Lawrence Jr.

- Retired publisher of the The Miami Herald with a 35-year career as reporter, editor or publisher at seven newspapers. Former president of both the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Inter American Press Association.
- President of The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation.
- University Scholar for Early Childhood Development and Readiness at the University of Florida.
- Chair of The Children’s Trust of Miami-Dade.
- Named by Gov. Jeb Bush to the Florida Partnership for School Readiness; he served two terms as chair.
- Board member of the Foundation for Child Development in New York and the High/Scope Educational Research Foundation in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
- Chaired the Governor's Blue Ribbon Panel on Child Protection.
- Key figure in the passage of the statewide constitutional amendment to make high-quality pre-kindergarten available for all of Florida's 4 year olds.

The David Lawrence Jr. Professorship in Early Childhood Studies has been endowed in perpetuity at the University of Florida, his alma mater and from where he holds an honorary doctorate (one of 12).
